New York and Labor Day

Did you know that the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City? Since then, Labor Day provides the country an opportunity to appreciate the achievements and hard work of American workers.

So, in tribute of the state that brought us all an extra-long weekend every year, we thought we’d pay tribute to New York wine on our wine blog.

Classic

The Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling 2017 is a classic New York wine with an amazing New York history.

In 1951, Dr. Konstantin Frank immigrated to America from the Ukraine to work as a janitor for the Geneva Experiment Station at Cornell University. But he was also concerned about wine production in America, thinking that the failure of wines in New York was due to the wrong choice of vine. He believed that the Vitis vinifera vines, the same ones he knew from Europe, would work better than the American ones being used in Finger Lakes.

Eventually, Dr. Frank was able to share his idea with Charles Fournier — a French Champagne maker — when he was hired by Fournier. In just one decade, Dr. Frank was producing quality wines like:

  • Riesling
  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Through his vine knowledge, Dr. Frank was able to increase the wine industry in Finger Lakes. In the 20th century, the region became known as the central area of New York’s wine industry.

Dry

If you’re looking for a dry Riesling at a great price, grab a bottle of Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling 2017

The Herman J. Wiemer Vineyard was started by Hermann Wiemer when he emigrated from Germany and settled west of Seneca Lake in New York. With him, he brought a variety of Euopean vinifera grapevines to produce his wine.

This Riesling provides a crisp and fruity taste that’s perfect for any Labor Day weekend event and works well with a wide range of food options.

Rosé

If you’re hosting a BBQ or get together this Labor Day, you can never go wrong with a bottle of Rosé. We love this Wolffer Estate Rose 2018 from Long Island, New York.

This wine is made on The Wolffer Estate, nestled in the heart of the Hamptons. The combination of local soil — Bridgehampton loam — and the glacial moraine that formed Long Island are what allow the grapevines to flourish.

This wine has a unique and beautiful orange, copper hue that combines with the aromas of apples and ripe pears. Your guests will love looking at this Rosé as much as they love drinking it!
